1、意思不同

a number of 相當(dāng)于a lot of，many，意思是：許多，一些。the number of意思是......的數(shù)。

The number of sick students is decreasing.生病學(xué)生的數(shù)量在減少。

A number of students are sick today. 今天一些學(xué)生病了。

2、用法不同

a number of后面動(dòng)詞用復(fù)數(shù)，the number of后面動(dòng)詞用單數(shù)。

A number of houses were burnt down in the fire.在火災(zāi)中，許多房子給燒毀了。

The number of business failures has risen.企業(yè)倒閉的數(shù)量增加了。

3、名詞用法不同

the number of表示“……的數(shù)目（號(hào)碼）”，of后跟復(fù)數(shù)名詞。a number of相當(dāng)于many，意為“許多”，后跟復(fù)數(shù)名詞或代詞。number前可用large，small等修飾，以表示程度。

The number of students in this class is 40.（正）這個(gè)班的學(xué)生數(shù)是40。
