Look people in the eye. Smile. Shake hands. Sit up tall. Speak clearly and confidently. That's the last-minute advice professor Paul Calhoun gives a handful of college students before they head off for a series of job interviews.

The Skidmore College seniors he's talking to are dressed in suits and shirts, or dresses and heels.

There isn't an actual job on the other end of these interviews, just a satisfactory / unsatisfactory grade from a class called Presenting the Brand Called Me at this college in New York. Calhoun created the popular course 10 years ago. He'd spent more than three decades working in the banking industry, where he saw the importance of presentation skills: “A lot of it is acting.”

When he came to Skidmore as a business professor, he noticed a lot of students struggling with public speaking. He got theater professors to help him shape what eventually became this class, in order to give business majors the training analogous to what the theater department gives to actors.

Over the 13 weeks, there's some role-playing with improv —“Talk for a minute about anything — go!”There are dance classes, and many guest speakers who talk about cover letters, resumes and personal branding. By the end of the course, students leave with a polished “STAR” story — the short story about themselves and their abilities that's designed to help land them a job. “People don't remember when you tell them you're good at something,” Calhoun explains. “They remember when you tell them a story that proves you're good at something.” Dante Delemos is a junior business major. In his interviews, he tells a story about winning the election for class president. And it works. Delemos is spending the summer working part-time in finance.

In addition, the class also created professional-sounding email addresses for students. Say goodbye to “Bubblegum123.” “You can't email your future boss with some really odd email name,” explains Tytianna McClenningham, a recent graduate. And there're email manners, too. “I didn't even think it was important to use a subject in an email,” McClenningham says. “But now I know.”

An international team of researchers from Sweden and the UK have developed an innovative way of interpreting biological signals produced by our skin. Using data obtained from a Philips wrist-worn wearable sensor device that can also measure movement, the researchers' system displays information in the form of colorful spiral graphics in real time on a smartphone, as well as a recording of data, for the wearer to interpret and reflect on.

The prototype visualization system, called ‘Affective Health’, was developed by experts in Human-Computer Interaction looking into how new and emerging computer technologies can be used to design engaging visualizations on smartphones.

A study group of 23 people were given the Affective Health prototype to use for a month. Importantly, the researchers purposely did not tell the participants what the devices were useful for. Instead, they gave guidelines that Affective Health could collect information relating to both physical and emotional reactions, how increased sweating increased the conductivity, and how this was represented by different colors. The participants were left to decide the best ways of using the technology.

The researchers found that this open design stage of the study led to some participants using the system as a tool to measure and help manage their stress levels. While others, including outstanding athletes, used the device to get information on their training and recovery programs. Other uses included logging information on their lives and tracking emotions. But interestingly, few would use the technology for more than one purpose.

Although the open design phase helped reveal several different practices Affective Health prototypes could be used for, the prototype lacked some of the functions needed to make it a good tool for a specific role — such as a sports training system, or as a stress management tool. The researchers found the need for a second, more tailored step in the design process to make devices specific to particular roles.

The production and distribution of food accounts for around a third of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions. But as a consumer, it's difficult to measure the climate impact of what you eat. A Dublin-based startup called Evocco could soon make it a cinch. “It lets you track, improve and offset the climate impact of your food purchases,” co-founder Hugh Weldon says.

Users simply photograph their grocery receipt using the Evocco app, which identifies the food products by reading the printed text and using machine learning. It then calculates the carbon footprint based on the store's location and by checking the type, weight and origin of a food against a database. The app also gives users the option to offset their shopping by contributing to Go Carbon Neutral, an Irish not-for-profit initiative that plants native woodland.

As well as the immediate impact of offsetting groceries, Evocco hopes to raise public awareness of the carbon footprint of different foods. Some factors are well known — for instance, animal products are typically more resource-intensive than most plant-based alternatives, and importing products increases their carbon footprint — but the app also helps identify other important differences between items, such as seasonality or whether refrigeration was required on the journey to market. It also offers tips on how to reduce shopping emissions. The app has been downloaded more than 1,000 times since its launch.

As well as the personal shopping app, Evocco is developing a digital tool to sell to food retailers, e-commerce platforms and delivery apps that will track the climate impact of a product's journey through the supply chain. The aim is to help retailers provide climate impact information directly for consumers, while also giving Evocco access to product data to improve its app. “Our vision is to be the go-to digital tool for the food industry when it comes to supplying climate impact information and sustainable consumption insights,” says Weldon.

Possible version1:

Suddenly, Bob remembered something and climbed downstairs where old shoes were stored. Wriggling his way through the sections where old limited-edition shoes were stocked, he searched high and low and finally rested his eyes on the shoe box at the top of the shelf. There it was; the pair bore much resemblance to what Buddy desired but were an older version. He gingerly brought it down and dusted the ash off. Then he contacted Haley's mother and explained his motive. “I want to surprise the girl. Is that OK if I drop off the shoes before six tomorrow morning?” “Sure. Thanks, Mr. White. I'm glad you could help!” Meg said gratefully.   

The next morning, Haley was shocked to find a shoe box lying outside her house. She rubbed her sleepy eyes and caught sight of the note stuck on the box. It read, “Hope Buddy loves them!” Curious to know what was inside, Haley hurriedly opened the box and stood stunned the next minute. Though a bit different, the shoes were what would make Buddy exhilarated. Cradling the shoes in her arms, she cried in joy. Meg, who had been hidden behind the door to eye her daughter’s reaction, shed tears, too. She was convinced that something else illuminated her that day — two golden hearts. 

Possible version2:

Suddenly, Bob remembered something and climbed downstairs where old shoes were stored. As he searched through the boxes of shoes, he came across a pair of limited edition sneakers that had been returned because of a minor defect on one of the soles. Although the defect did not affect the shoe's performance, it had made them unsellable. Bob realized that these sneakers were perfect for Buddy and that he could give them to Haley to give to him. Therefore, Bob attached a note to the shoe box and sent it to Haley’s home overnight.

The next morning, Haley was shocked to find a shoe box lying outside her house. She excitedly opened it to find the limited-edition sneakers she had wanted for Buddy, along with a note from Bob. The note explained that he had overheard their conversation and wanted to help. He told Haley to give the shoes to Buddy as a gift from her, and to not worry about the cost. Haley's eyes filled with tears of gratitude, and she couldn't wait to surprise Buddy with his new shoes.

一、評(píng)分原則

1.總分 25 分,按 5 個(gè)檔次給分。

2.讀后續(xù)寫評(píng)分以17分為參考線,根據(jù)續(xù)寫內(nèi)容的連貫性、情節(jié)的合理性以及語(yǔ)言質(zhì)量定檔給分,然后以該檔次的要求衡量、確定或調(diào)整檔次,最后給分。

3.評(píng)分時(shí),應(yīng)主要從以下四個(gè)方面考慮:

(1)與所給短文及段落開(kāi)頭語(yǔ)的銜接程度;

(2)內(nèi)容的合理性;

(3)應(yīng)用語(yǔ)法結(jié)構(gòu)和詞匯的豐富性和準(zhǔn)確性;

(4)上下文的連貫性。

4.重點(diǎn)關(guān)注續(xù)寫完整度,結(jié)尾處有升華,可加 1~2 分。(關(guān)于升華,不要出現(xiàn)幾個(gè)抽象詞就簡(jiǎn)單加分,要上升到正能量層面的完整表達(dá),要出彩,因?yàn)檫@是加分項(xiàng),不能濫用。)

5.如果僅續(xù)寫一個(gè)段落,三檔中位12.5 分為上限,在此基礎(chǔ)上相應(yīng)扣分。

6.拼寫與標(biāo)點(diǎn)符號(hào)是語(yǔ)言準(zhǔn)確性的一個(gè)方面,評(píng)分時(shí),應(yīng)視其對(duì)交際的影響程度予以考慮。英、美拼寫及詞匯用法均可接受。

7.不足130 詞扣2 分;對(duì)詞數(shù)沒(méi)有上限,即超詞不扣分。

8.書寫較差以至于影響交際的扣 1-2 分。

9.摘抄閱讀理解或前文的一律記 0 分。

比較有效地使用了語(yǔ)句間的銜接手段,全文結(jié)構(gòu)比較清晰,意義連貫。

 

第三檔

(11-15 分)

創(chuàng)造了基本合理的內(nèi)容,有一定的邏輯性,續(xù)寫基本完整,與原文情境相關(guān);

使用了簡(jiǎn)單的詞匯和語(yǔ)法結(jié)構(gòu),有一些錯(cuò)誤和不恰當(dāng)之處,但基本不影響理解; 

基本有效地使用了語(yǔ)句間的銜接手段,全文結(jié)構(gòu)基本清晰,意義基本連貫。

 

第二檔

(6-10 分)

未能創(chuàng)造合理的內(nèi)容,全文邏輯性較差,續(xù)寫不完整,與原文情境相關(guān)度不高;

使用了較少詞匯和語(yǔ)法結(jié)構(gòu),有較多錯(cuò)誤,影響理解; 

很少使用語(yǔ)句間的銜接手段,結(jié)構(gòu)不夠清晰,意義不夠連貫。

As a little girl, I dreamt of getting into filming. I worked in a shop just after graduation. Then a friend got me a temporary job for a company doing films. One day, I saw a post for a person to be a runner working for a TV program. I thought that was the perfect opportunity. I was delighted when I got it. Now I've been a director for about twelve years. I've done a number of different programs, like Bargain Hunt and Home Cooking, but at the moment I'm working on a nature program called Country File. The hardest part of the job is getting the music together. When you find a piece of music that goes with the film then you create the right atmosphere and it totally brings the film alive. There's so much variety in my job and I'm always learning about new things. Last year, I did a writing course. It really made sense to me. Not long ago, I did a film about some rare birds and we had to use new technology to film at night. I prefer to learn from experience by trying something out. I try new things to discover my potential, and try to adjust myself to the social environment and improve myself step by step.
