the number of表示“……的數(shù)量”，作主語的中心詞時，謂語動詞用單數(shù)形式；a number of表示“若干的，許多的”，起修飾作用，相當于many或a lot of，a number of+復數(shù)可數(shù)名詞作主語時，其謂語動詞用復數(shù)形式。
